8 startups repping Philly’s health IT scene at SXSW

On the first day of SXSW Interactive, former Vice President Joe Biden delivered a powerful message to a captivated crowd. He was in Austin to announce his foundation’s new cancer initiative. The enthusiasm of the audience was reflective of a highly healthcare-centric SXSW. The trade show, interactive programs and keynote addresses by folks like IBM boss Ginni Rometty and Johnson & Johnson chief exec Alex Gorsky had a common message: data will transform healthcare. That’s a message that make sense to me. At Oncora Medical, the Philadelphia healthcare startup I lead, we like to say we’re fighting cancer with data. Our software platform for oncologists leverages data about past cancer cases to

14 Philadelphia Women Who Amplified Philly at SXSW

As Philly’s presence at SXSW comes to a close this week, it’s time to recognize the women who championed Philadelphia at the conference all week long. Whether they are a company founder, a leader in Philly’s tech scene or a city liaison, these women traveled to Austin and elevated Philly’s name. Some spoke on panels and worked the tradeshow, while others networked with creatives from across the country to share what Philly has to offer and to learn. Here are 14 women who amplified Philly at SXSW 2017 and their takeaways from the conference and reflections on their work. Yuval Yarden, executive director, Philly Startup Leaders “It’s awesome to see the growth of this initiative from a small i

SXSW Day 5: Scenes From the Music Showcase

After the SXSW tradeshow came to a close, Philadelphia was out in full force on Tuesday night at the Amplify Philly official showcase held at Buffalo Billiards on 6th Street in Austin. The showcase only served to solidify the pride Philadelphians emitted for Philly at SXSW. “It’s amazing that you can see the same faces in Austin that you’d see walking down South Street,” said Scarlet Hernandez, the senior account manager at REC Philly, as she watched the venue fill up Tuesday night. Our host, DJ Aktive, got things going by picking up right where he left off when he closed Monday night’s VIP Event. He kept the energy high all night and the crowd dancing as he spun music from Chance the Rapper

SXSW Day 4: Philly Knows How to Mix & Mingle

A build-your-own cheesesteak bar and a set by legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff were two highlights of Amplify’s Philly’s VIP event hosted at the Old School Bar & Grill. Eager SXSWers formed a line that wrapped around the block to enter the sold-out show on Austin’s bustling 6th Street Monday night. DJ Royale kicked the night off with a mix that had guests on the dance floor within minutes, and Jazzy Jeff and DJ Aktive kept the energy going all night. It was easy to spot the Amplify Philly team in their blue t-shirts as they mingled with attendees throughout the crowd. Conversations centered on the impact Philly is making at SXSW. “After seeing this event, the pride you guys have for your city is unde

SXSW Day 3: Scenes from the Tradeshow

It’s the morning of March 12th and the 1800 block of the Austin Convention Center is buzzing with activity as 15 startups from Philadelphia put the final touches on their SXSW trade show displays. As the doors open, a tangible energy runs through the Amplify Philly camp. “The Philly presence is extremely encouraging,” said Elisa Stasi, director of alumni events at Temple University. “Our community is really lifting each other up this year.” The Amplify Philly team barely had any downtime with the steady stream of attendees stopping by to see what Philadelphia has to offer. The team was exited to also have Mayor Kenney stop by the tradeshow to check out Philly’s presence this year. “The past

SXSW Day 2: Mayor Kenney Keeps It Real on Immigration

The Trump administration has been looming over SXSW this year — there was a well-attended discussion titled “A Conversation With the Failing New York Times” and a tech rally for Planned Parenthood, for example. And on Saturday, March 11th, Philly got the opportunity to weigh in on the administration’s controversial immigration policies. Mayor Kenney sat on a panel titled, “Building Bridges When Other Want to Build Walls” along with fellow panelists Mayor Gonzales of Santa Fe and Kate Brick from the New American Economy, a national coalition of business leaders and mayors. They tackled questions about the current climate for immigrants in the United States and how we can all do our part to su

SXSW Day 1: Philly Can Become a Smart City

Philly has officially settled in at SXSW, and we can’t say we miss the northeast weather. On Friday, March 10th, our first full day of events, the Amplify Philly team, Mayor Kenney and city staffers, sat in on a panel that connected directly to some initiatives already in motion back at home. The panel — “Smart Cities Sound Off: The Future of Transportation” — featured Mayor Kasim Reed of Atlanta in discussion with other panelists about the need for flexible policies to implement the infrastructure needed to build Smart Cities. Given Philadelphia’s recently awarded Smart Cities Council Readiness Challenge grant, it was great to hear from other cities already successfully making progress in t
